Here was the situation. It was an unseasonably hot spring day here in the mountains. It seemed perfect to cook a steak. She Who Must Be Obeyed agreed if I did the potatoes and cooked the steak to medium. Sigh, she must be obeyed. I fired up the Weber Genesis grill and went to work.
I preheated the Weber by turning two burners on just below medium. You want the thermometer to show about 400 F.
I cut four medium sized red potatoes into a 1/2 inch dice and tossed them with 15 ml (1 tablespoon) olive oil, 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of Italian seasoning blend and 1/2 cup diced onions.
I put that in an aluminum pie plate (you could use a small roasting pan) and covered it with foil. I put it on the top rack of the Weber and closed the lid.
I let it cook for 30 minutes, giving it a shake a couple of times.
While it was cooking, I took a 700 gram (12 ounce) top sirloin steak and sprinkled 3 ml (1/2 teaspoon) each of salt, pepper, onion powder and garlic powder on it.
When the potatoes had been cooked for 1/2 hour, I turned the burner up to high and closed the lid for 5 minutes.
Then I put the steak on and cooked it on that side for 6 minutes, rotating it 90 degrees at 3 minutes to get nice grill marks.
I flipped the steak over and cooked it until the internal temperature was 140 F (I like it rarer but I also like the missus).
I took it off and let it sit for 5 minutes to rest. I took the cover off the potatoes just before serving.
As She Who Must Be Obeyed and I are getting older, this steak was lots for the two of it and I cut it in half.
We served it with some great coleslaw.
The Verdict
With the exception of the steak being over done (please don’t tell the missus I said that), this was wonderful. The Weber is such a convenient way to do a steak and the simple seasonings enhanced but didn’t get in the way of the nice beef taste. The potatoes were nicely seasoned and tasty.
A steak meal is easy with a gas grill.

Very nice OFG, my SWMBO and I had a similar meal last night, cooked on a Genesis E320. 🙂
