We were in the middle of getting new floors and couldn’t use our kitchen. Fortunately, my barbecue has a side burner. Even more fortunate, we had fresh beans in the garden! Time for a stir fry.
I made Garlic Sauce in the prior post. You can buy it in the oriental section of your supermarket but it won’t be as good.
I started by trimming the ends of 2 cups of beans. I coarsely chopped a couple of small green peppers from the garden. I threw in a small squash but it was just to use it up. It was so small it added nothing to the dish.
I heated up the oil in the wok until it just started to smoke. I threw in the vegetables and stir fried until the beans were starting to get brown spots but were still crunchy, about 4 minutes. I added the red wine and continued to stir fry until it was mostly evaporated.
I tossed in the shrimp and stir fried until they were opaque and just cooked, about 2 minutes. I put the garlic sauce in and stir fried until the sauce was heated through and the shrimp and beans were coated, about 1 minute.
We served it with a rice and pad thai noodle salad from the supermarket. The salads were ok but a real disappointment when compared to home cooked food. I am glad I have my kitchen back.
The stir fry was delicious! She Who Must Be Obeyed commented on the garlic content but ate it all and admitted it was very tasty. Shrimp, fresh vegetables and garlic sauce equal a great meal. Particularly when you use my homemade garlic sauce.
The Old Fat Guy
- 170 grams (6 ounces) raw shrimp, shelled, deveined
- 500 ml (2 cups) string beans, trimmed
- 50 ml (1/4 cup) oil
- 2 small or 1/2 large green pepper, cut into chunks
- 50 ml (1/4 cup) red wine
- 75 ml (1/3 cup) garlic sauce (available in oriental section of supermarkets or make your own)
- Heat the oil until just smoking.
- Add beans and peppers and stir fry until brown spots start to appear on beans but they are still crispy, about 4 minutes.
- Add the red wine and continue stir frying until the wine is almost evaporated, about 2 minutes.
- Add the shrimp and stir fry until just opaque and firm, about 2 minutes.
- Add the garlic sauce and stir until it is heated through and coats the shrimp and beans, about 1 minute.
