Saint Patrick’s day deserves a wee drop of the creature! My choice for this year’s celebration, a Tipperary Cocktail.

This is a cocktail based on Irish Whiskey but has some martini influences with vermouth. It has additional flavour from Chartruese.

I admit to some trepidation. What is Irish about vermouth and Chartruese! However, I put my doubts aside and gave it a try. After all, how bad could a cocktail based on Irish Whiskey be?

For each drink, I put the following into a cocktail mixer half full of ice:

  • 1 1/2 oz (45 ml) quality Irish Whiskey (I used Bushmill Blackbush)
  • 1 oz (30 ml) vermouth
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) Green Chartruese
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) water
  • 1 tsp (5 ml)  simple syrup (2 parts sugar, 1 part water heated until dissolved)
  • 1 dash bitters

Stir until the mixer is very cold.

Strain into glasses and enjoy!

The Verdict

This is an easy cocktail to drink. It has quite a high alcohold content with the three liquors but it tastes very smooth and tasty. The Bushmills Black Bush gives a smooth background and the vermouth, Chartreuse, and bitters give a nice herbal complexity. This is a great cocktail for Saint Patrick’s day. Slainte!
