My friend, Norm, gave me some smoked trout. It is a real treat just by itself. However, it also makes a luxurious dip that is perfect for entertaining or date night.
While I made this with smoked trout, it is good with any smoked fish like salmon or whitefish.
I mixed:
- 125 ml (1/2 cup) cream cheese
- 125 ml (1/2 cup) sour cream
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) fresh lemon juice
- 15 ml (1 tbsp) seafood (cocktail) sauce
- 25 ml (2 tbsp) green onion, chopped fine
In my stand mixer for a couple of minutes, scraped the bowl and mixed for another seconds.
Add 140 grams (5 oz) flaked smoked fish to the bowl and mix until well combined. Put the mixture in a bowl and put in the fridge, covered, for from 1 hour to overnight.
Serve the dip with crackers, bread pieces or cut up vegetables.
I made a video to show how to make this:
The Verdict
This tastes like something fancy and very expensive. The smoked fish is rich but is complemented by the touch of tart from the cream cheese and sour cream. The touch of horseradish from the seafood sauce gives a great complexity. This is perfect for a special occasion but is easy enough to have any time.
