I have met so many great people since I started this blog. Recently, I met Ian of Kirian Spices on Twitter. He traveled to Greece and found that their oregano had a stronger and fresher flavour than the oregano we get here. He started importing Greek spices.

He asked me if I would give them a try and I happily agreed. You need to know that the products in this review were provided to me for free. I have received no compensation for this review and only accepted the products on the agreement I would give an hones review.

Here is a video of me doing a detailed review:

It is over 10 minutes long as I review several products. Here is a short version of my review of each product.

Oregano:

The oregano has a significantly stronger bouquet than my home grown oregano and even more than store bought. The fragrance is a bit more complex than even my home grown with some nice floral background.

The taste when chewed raw really give a big burst of oregano flavour. It is not just stronger, it has a fresh complex taste.

When used in a rub on my Memphis Ribs the oregano stood up well to cooking and gave the ribs a rich herb background taste.

Thyme:

The thyme had a touch more scent than the commercial but not as noticeable a difference as with the oregano.

However, when chewed raw, it really had a bolder taste than the commercial. It had layers of some oils and resins that complemented the basic thyme taste.

I also added the thyme to the rub for my Memphis ribs. They stood up well to the cooking and gave a great earthy taste to the ribs.

Bay Leaves:

The bay leaves smell fresher than commercially purchased ones. I didn’t try it in a long boil but I did grind it for a fish seasoning I use. It has more bay taste than my commercial leaves.

Greek Mountain Tea:

This is a large leaf tea that is added to water before it is boiled. The water is brought to a boil for 5 minutes and the leaves are strained out. It is definitely a herbal tea and has a floral taste with a touch of citrus. It isĀ  good with a soothing taste on its own but I found it really was wonderful with a bit of honey.

The Verdict

Ian has found a source for gourmet seasonings. I don’t know if it is the varieties or where it was grown but I suspect a lot of the better fragrance and taste comes from smaller production and direct importation.

Whatever the cause, these are a premium product that would be appreciated by any foodie.
