Sometimes you need an old fashioned comforting soup. Hamburger soup goes back to the 1930’s when it was used to stretch a pound of hamburger into a meal for several people. It has hung around because it tastes so good.

I started by browning the beef in a large pot. I added the onions and celery and sautéed for a minute or two, until the vegetables start to soften.

I added the rest of the ingredients and brought the mixture to a boil. I lowered the heat and simmered for 1 1/2 hours.

The Verdict

This is so good. It tastes really beefy and the tomato flavour is strong. I love hamburger soup!

  1. My father always made hamburger soup but without the tomato ingredient. we all loved it. a little bit of this and that which was on hand. Cauliflower, peppers, etc. ( years ago, we also used to mash it all up and freeze it in ice cube trays for when the babies were old enough for table food. Looking forward to trying your version , sounds like a nice winter warm me up.
