Thermapen is an instant read thermometer that advertises itself as fast and accurate. It is. I don’t know how I cooked without it. It just reads temperatures withing a couple of seconds and is deadly accurate. If you have ever sat waiting for your instant read thermometer to come to temperature wondering if you are there yet, you know why I love this product.
The Advantages:
- Fast. You stick it in and it rapidly comes to the reading and stops.
- Accurate. I have tested it in ice water when I got it and today. Right on.
- Easy to use. You pull out the probe and it is on. You close the probe and it is off.
- Somewhat water resistant. The most accurate of instant read thermometers do not like water and can’t be immersed in water. This one can’t be immersed either but is designed to withstand splashes of water.
The Disadvantages:
- It is expensive. I paid about $100.
- It is fairly large compared to some competitors but still fits easily in a shirt pocket.
- It is expensive.
- It is not waterproof. You can not and should not immerse it in water. You just wash the probe clean.
- It is expensive.
The Verdict
Thermapen proves the axiom, you get what you pay for. It does exactly what it is designed to do and it does it very well.
