Green Tomatoes

We had a cold and wet July and it put my tomatoes behind. We are already getting frost here in the mountains. The net result is that I have a lot of green tomatoes. So, I was making my Green Tomato Mincemeat and thought I should remind all of you that this is a good way to use green tomatoes.

Also, have you ever tried replacing 1/3 of the apples in pie, cobbler or crisp with green tomatoes? Try it! It still tastes like apples but it has a touch of sour like green apples. It is really good.

  1. My grandma made a green tomato pie once that was sweet and spiced like apple pie. And my mom made green tomato relish one year. I never think to do much with green tomatoes. I really should change that rather than letting the last fruit go with no use.

    1. Well, the green tomato mincemeat is a requirement around here. We use it at Christmas. I don’t care for green tomato relish so much. Maybe I just haven’t found the right recipe. As for using them in pies, if you put them with apples, you wouldn’t know there was tomatoes in there, it is just a tad more sour.
