A Failure, Sourdough Rhubarb Muffins

Sourdough Rhubarb Muffins Fail

I have been asked where I come up with all my recipes. I just get an idea and have to give it try. Often, it is something I’ve made before I want to change or I am inspired by something someone else makes. Occasionally, I just get a wild idea.

As well as being asked about where I come up with ideas, it was pointed out to me that all the recipes I post are successes and I was asked how that was possible. I almost did a spit take.

Sit down. Take a deep breath. This might be hard for you to believe. I am not perfect. I have tried things that don’t work and others that are epic failures. She Who Must Be Obeyed suggests it might be easier to believe than I think.

I am trying stuff all the time. A significant number don’t turn out the way I wanted them to and I just don’t post those.

For example, our rhubarb is ready. She Who Must Be Obeyed makes a great Rhubarb Muffin. I thought it would be even better in a sourdough version.

So, I went to work figuring out proportions that should give a good texture, a nice sweet versus sour balance and a nice colour. I mixed it up and fired it in the oven. The result tasted great!

Unfortunately, I hadn’t allowed for the amount of liquid that would come off the rhubarb in baking. This made the batter too liquid and let the rhubarb sink to the bottom of the muffin tin where it welded itself to the tin. The texture was too chewy and it was almost impossible to get the muffins out of the tin in one piece.

I hand my head in shame. What a stupid mistake but just one of a litany my old brain has led me too.

The moral of the story is to try things, don’t worry about failures and have fun.

So ends the sermon from a stupid Old Fat Guy.

  1. Oh well sometimes we fail!! I tried to make these maple twist cookies that my mother always made. I was so excited as I hadn’t had them in years. The problem was my mother’s old recipes fall short on instructions. So I had my epic failure, never thought of posting the failure congrats!!!!

  2. It is always disappointing when things don’t come out the way you picture them. It’s part of the fun of it though! If everything worked it wouldn’t be as exciting when something REALLY worked! I’ve got a pile of ideas a mile high to try with sourdough starter thanks to your inspiration. I’ll wait on the rhubarb muffins until you get it all ironed out 😉

    1. Thanks for the kind words and good luck with the sourdough. The choice re the muffins is a good one!

  3. lol! At least we learn from our mistakes, right?

On another note… We got a smoker this week! Husband and I both have been reviewing some of your recipes. Any suggestions on a first recipe to try for a beginner? Also wondering… Any book you would recommend for my husband to break into this smoking world?
